Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) Movie Review: A Poignant Tribute Wrapped in Epic Spectacle


Ryan Coogler's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever carries an emotional weight unlike almost any other superhero sequel, forced to confront the real-life passing of star Chadwick Boseman while still delivering a Marvel blockbuster. Rather than recasting T'Challa, the film boldly chooses to grieve him on screen, turning a franchise sequel into something closer to a meditation on loss, legacy, and what it means to move forward without your protector.


Plot Overview


Set in the aftermath of T'Challa's death, Wakanda finds itself vulnerable without its king, and international powers circle the nation hungry for its vibranium resources. The story escalates when Wakanda's search for a new vibranium source draws the attention of Namor, ruler of the hidden underwater nation of Talokan, whose people face similar threats of exploitation. What begins as a geopolitical thriller evolves into a clash between two proud, isolated civilizations, forcing Queen Ramonda, Shuri, and the Dora Milaje to navigate both external threats and internal grief.


Performances


Angela Bassett delivers a towering, awards-worthy performance as Queen Ramonda, commanding every scene with a mixture of regal authority and raw maternal anguish. Letitia Wright carries much of the film's emotional arc as Shuri, transitioning from grief-stricken scientist to a young woman forced into a legacy she never wanted, though her arc occasionally feels rushed given the film's packed runtime. Tenoch Huerta is a genuine highlight as Namor, bringing unexpected depth and sympathy to a villain whose motivations — protecting his people from colonial exploitation — feel disturbingly relevant rather than cartoonish.


Direction and Visual Style


Coogler once again proves himself one of the MCU's most visually distinctive directors, contrasting Wakanda's vibrant, Afrofuturist aesthetic with Talokan's haunting, bioluminescent underwater world. The film's action sequences are grand in scale, though it's the quieter, grief-laden moments — funeral rites, private conversations, unspoken glances — where the film truly distinguishes itself from typical superhero fare.


Where It Falls Short


At nearly two and a half hours, the film juggles an enormous amount — political conflict, new characters, franchise setup, and personal grief — and occasionally strains under that weight. Some subplots, including a new character introduced late in the film, feel more like franchise groundwork than essential to this story. The pacing dips in the middle stretch before the film regains momentum for its climactic confrontation.


Score and Emotional Core


Ludwig Göransson's score once again blends orchestral grandeur with African and Mexican musical influences, underscoring both cultures' identities with distinct sonic character. The film's emotional peaks, particularly its handling of collective mourning, land with a sincerity rarely seen in blockbuster cinema.


Legacy


Wakanda Forever stands as a rare franchise film that prioritizes emotional honesty over franchise mechanics, using superhero spectacle as a vessel to process real grief. It cemented Shuri's path forward as the new Black Panther while honoring Boseman's legacy with genuine dignity rather than glossing over the loss.

Despite some pacing and plotting issues, Wakanda Forever succeeds where it matters most — as a heartfelt tribute that respects both its late star and the world he helped build, while still delivering the scale and spectacle audiences expect from the franchise.
